Watch and Discuss:

Watch a video clip from Season 2, episode 6: (Based on Matthew chapter 12, verses 9–13 in the Bible). As you watch, take notes and be prepared to answer the following questions:

  1. Where does this story take place? Describe the scene.
  2. What was the leader reading from?
  3. What was wrong with the man Jesus spoke to?
  4. How many women were watching?
  5. Describe the clothing the leaders were wearing.

Lamech: (Reading from the Jewish law) No one born of a union may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation, none of his may enter the assembly of the Lord. No Ammonites or Moabites may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth , none of them may enter assembly of the Lord forever! Rabbi Madai: Who are you to speak to our in such a way!

Jesus: Of how much more is this man than a sheep?

Lamech: Stop this at once.

Jesus: Come here, come stand here. It's okay.

Rabbi Madai: Elam sit down. We don't know this person. He could be a .

Jesus: Is it on Sabbath to do good or to do harm to save life or to kill?

Rabbi Madai: This does not threaten his life.

Lamech: It does not even his health.

Jesus: Stretch it out. It's good, huh?

Lamech: If he was to be healed, God would have done it Himself!

Jesus: Interesting point.

Rabbi Madai: Get out!

Jesus: Gladly.

Lamech: !

Rabbi Madai: What is wrong with you?

Jesus: everything.

Lamech: Wait! Come back! How you!

Discussion Questions:

  1. What impression do you have of the religious leaders in the time of Jesus? Explain with examples from the clip.
  2. According to the Jewish law, the Sabbath (Saturday) was to be a day of rest from work. Do you think Jesus broke the Sabbath law that day? Explain why or why not.
  3. Lamech said that God Himself would have healed Elam if God had wanted to heal him and Jesus responded, “Interesting point”. What was Jesus really saying here?
  4. The Jewish leaders told Jesus to get out but then a moment later they called Him to come back. Why do you think they wanted Him to come back? What do you think would have happened?
  5. What did you learn about Jesus from this story?
